Survival Kit Contest

Just a short note about our recent survival kit contest that we had at 1st Moncton. As part of their BP Woodsman requirements they Scouts had to construct a Survival/Emergency Kit. We decided to make it into a contest with the winner and runner up receiving a prize.

The Scouts were given 2 weeks to create a survival Kit and told to be innovative and creative in their construction. This past Tuesday (Oct 20th) was the deadline and all but one Scout brought them in. Judging was carried out by former 1st Moncton scout Trevor Goodwin.

While all the scouts had good survival kits there was very little innovating creativity most of the scouts just followed the list that was posted here in an earlier blog post without going above and beyond the basic requirements so to speak. There were however 2 Kits that stood out and Trevor judged to be the winners.

Josh Pellerin came in second place with his inclusion of water purification tablets. His prize was a small sewing kit donated by Ron Goodwin and an Emergency Survival Blanket from Mountain Equipment Co-op

First Prize went to scout Sadie Shaban who won with her inclusions of a small survival pouch with instruction on how to overcome the fear and anxiety that usually accompany ones realization of being lost in the woods. One of the most important things to remember when lost in the woods is to keep your wits about you. and having something that you can read over and that will tell you how to keep cool and what to do. Trevor decided  that this was an Item that would greatly increase your chances of survival and It was something that no one else had. Sadie won a Gerber Sheath knife from Mountain Equipment Co-op
